Getting Started

You don’t need to be a developer to be great with AI.

AI fluency isn’t about writing code, mastering every new tool, or knowing the right “magic prompts.” It’s about learning to think clearly alongside AI — knowing when to trust it, when to push back, and how to make it genuinely useful in your work and life.

If you’ve ever felt like everyone else is ahead of you on AI, take a breath. Most people are figuring this out as they go. This playbook is here to help you do that — with structure, at your own pace, and without the hype.

This playbook was built for generalists — people who wear many hats, work across domains, and don’t fit neatly into a single job title. That might be you if:

  • You use AI tools sometimes but aren’t sure you’re getting the most out of them
  • You lead a team and want to understand AI well enough to make good decisions
  • You’re curious about AI but overwhelmed by the noise
  • You’ve taken a course or two but want something more hands-on and practical

You don’t need any technical background. If you can have a conversation with ChatGPT, Claude, or similar tools, you have everything you need to start.

  • 15 hands-on exercises you can do in 15-40 minutes, no setup required
  • Five skill pillars that break AI fluency into concrete, buildable areas
  • Three difficulty levels so you can start where you are and grow from there
  • Learning style archetypes and pathways that personalize your journey based on how you learn best
  • Resources including a glossary, tool recommendations, and further reading

Let’s be honest about what this is:

  • Not a certification program. There’s no test at the end. The goal is practical skill, not credentials.
  • Not a comprehensive AI course. If you want deep technical training, resources like Anthropic’s courses or DeepLearning.AI are excellent. This playbook is a practical starting point and companion, not a replacement.
  • Not a one-time read. It’s designed to be revisited. Do an exercise, come back next week, try another. Growth happens over time.

Here are three ways in, depending on what feels right:

  1. Jump into an exerciseThe Fact-Check Habit is a great first one. It takes 15 minutes and you’ll learn something immediately.

  2. Take the AI Skills Quiz — Visit aiskillsquiz.com to discover your strengths and get a personalized starting point.

  3. Read the overview — Check out The Five Pillars to understand the full framework before diving in.

Whatever you choose, you’re already doing the most important thing: showing up and being willing to learn.
